Now enrolling · ONSTRIDE-2 study

Are you tired all the time?

That is not being lazy. It has a name: idiopathic hypersomnia, or IH. “Idiopathic” means doctors do not know what causes it yet. A research study called ONSTRIDE-2 is now enrolling adults 18 and older who live with it — run right here by the sleep doctors at Sleep and Attention Disorders Institute.

  • The check takes about 2 minutes. There is no cost, and no pressure to join.
  • Study medicine and all study visits are free.
  • Most visits happen in person at our clinic.

People who join are paid for their time and travel. Some patients earn up to $1,700 for completing the study, with the potential for more if they continue into the optional extension.

Apply for the study

Answer a few questions and we will tell you if you may be a fit for the ONSTRIDE-2 study. This is not the full list of requirements — the study doctor goes through all of them with you before anything is decided. Answering does not sign you up for anything.

Does this sound like you?

Everyone told you to go to bed earlier. You did. It did not help.

Idiopathic hypersomnia is a brain and sleep condition. Your body sleeps plenty. Your brain still runs on empty. It is not in your head, and it is not a habit you can fix by trying harder.

You sleep 9 to 11 hours and wake up wrecked
A full night in bed. Sometimes more. And your body acts like you never slept.
Waking up takes you an hour or more
Three alarms. Foggy, confused, moving on autopilot. Doctors call this sleep inertia. You just call it every morning.
Long naps make you feel worse
You nap for two hours and wake up feeling worse than before. This is one of the biggest clues that points to IH.
The fog never really lifts
Drained and slow all day, no matter how much rest you get. Work, driving, and family life all get harder.

If you have been told you have IH and this is your normal week, the ONSTRIDE-2 study may be worth a look. Checking takes about two minutes, and it does not commit you to anything.

About the study

So what is the ONSTRIDE-2 study, in plain words?

Doctors are testing a once-a-day tablet called HBS-301 to see if it helps adults with idiopathic hypersomnia. The study looks at whether it is safe, and whether it helps with the sleepiness and the heavy morning fog.

Right now there are not many options for IH. The medicines that exist do not work for everyone, and some people get side effects they do not want. That is the reason studies like this one exist — to find out if something better is possible.

The study is paid for by Harmony Biosciences and run near you by the team at Sleep and Attention Disorders Institute, where the doctors caring for you are sleep specialists. A safety board of doctors and experts reviewed this study before a single person joined.

Never done a study before?

A clinical study is how doctors find out if a new medicine works and if it is safe. People who join take the study medicine and are watched closely by a medical team. What they learn is used to decide whether the medicine should be approved for everyone.

What you get

Here is exactly what taking part includes

Joining is your choice, and it stays your choice. You can say no now, and you can leave the study later at any point, for any reason, with nothing owed.

You get paid for this study.

No bill for any visit, test, or procedure that is part of the study. No insurance needed.Payment for time and travel may reach up to $1,700, based on the visits and procedures your part of the study requires. Payment is for your time — it is not a benefit of the study medicine.

The study medicine costs you nothing

Whether you get HBS-301 or the placebo, you never pay for it.

A sleep team watching over you

You check in with the study team every week during the treatment period. Somebody is actually paying attention to your sleep.

You are paid for your time and travel

People who take part are paid for the time and travel the study asks of them. Help with meals and a place to stay may also be available. Your study coordinator will go over the exact amounts with you.

You help move IH research forward

Every option doctors have today exists because people volunteered first. You would be part of the next one.

An optional extra year, if you want it

After the main part ends, you may be able to keep going for about a year. In that part, everyone takes HBS-301 — nobody gets the placebo.

Who can join

Three things decide if you are a fit

You are 18 or older

The study is for adults only.

A doctor told you that you have IH

You need a diagnosis of idiopathic hypersomnia from a health care provider. If you don't have this, please make an appointment with us today.

You still live with the symptoms

Sleepy through the day, brutal mornings, or a fog that will not lift.

This is not the full list. The study doctor goes through every requirement with you before anything is decided. The fastest way to find out where you stand is the two-minute check below.

What actually happens

Here is the whole thing, start to finish

About 16 weeks in total — unless you choose to stay on for the optional extra year. Most of it happens from your couch, by phone or video.

  1. 1
    Up to 28 days

    First, they check you out

Tests and questions to make sure the study is a safe fit for you. If it is not, you find out here, and you owe nothing.

  2. 2
    8 weeks

    Then you take the tablets

One tablet each morning — either HBS-301 or a placebo, picked at random. Neither you nor the study team knows which one you have. You check in every week by phone or video so the team can watch your health.

  3. 3
    About 30 days

    Then two check-ins after

Two more calls or video visits, about 15 and 30 days after your last tablet, to see how you are doing.

  4. 4
About 1 year · your choice

Then an extra year, if you want

If you qualify and choose to keep going, everyone in this part takes HBS-301 — no placebo. Check-ins are monthly by phone or video, plus 4 visits to the clinic across the year.

Some visits include blood tests, heart tests, a physical exam, or questionnaires. If you take certain other medicines, your dose may be adjusted. The study team explains every step before it happens.
